The male develop a bigger Nuchal hump ( the protusion formed from fatty deposits on the forehead) make them also known as Humphead or Lionhead cichlid. It always spends most of its time resting on the aquarium floor with their pelvic fins act as a "foot" and swim with short-hopping-motion, appearing to bounce around the tank floor.

Their natural habitat has undergone extensive degradation via deforestation, dam construction, introduced exotic species and fishing with water levels drastically low, and wild populations may already have disappeared. NOW, The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) is desperately seeking a female of these Ptychochromis insolitus to pair with the LAST two remaining males being maintained at London Zoo Aquarium.  And with two of the males now 12 years old, the quest is said to be extremely urgent.
