One of the most popular fish for aquascape setup. 'Denisonii' named for Sir William Thomas Denison (1804-1871), governor of Madras, India from 1861-1866. Unfortunately, this species now listed as Endangered species in IUCN Redlist, due to Collection for the international aquarium pet trade. In addition, there is an on-going decline in habitat quality at prime habitats of this species due to pollution from plantations as well as domestic sources. Destructive fishing for larger food fish using dynamites and plant poisons also affect this 'Miss Kerala' as they share habitats with the larger cyprinids.
